Dr. Kamble Residence

This contemporary architectural project showcases a striking, modern aesthetic achieved through the layering of geometric forms and contrasting textures. The design is characterized by a strong interplay of large, block-like masses with prominent cantilevered projections and deep recesses, enhancing the three-dimensional depth of the façade. A key design language involves the juxtaposition of smooth, light-colored stucco or paint with richer, natural elements like wooden cladding (often used on ceilings and vertical bands) and textured stone or brickwork, creating visual warmth against crisp, modern lines. Extensive use of modern materials such as frameless glass railings on balconies contributes to the clean, minimalist lines and maximizes transparency.

A crucial aesthetic feature of this design is the sophisticated use of architectural lighting to define and dramatize the structure, especially during the evening. Recessed linear fixtures, spotlights, and hidden strip lighting are strategically placed to highlight the texture of the stone and wood, emphasize the cantilevered slabs, and make the building forms appear to float. The multi-storey structure is carefully designed to separate functional zones through elevation; the ground floor often features a more robust, commercial-style base, while the upper residential or specialized floors introduce softer elements like planters, pergolas, and decorative screens, ensuring the overall aesthetic is both visually complex and highly functional.

The layout prioritizes natural elements like air, light and water, blending them seamlessly into the space to create a balanced environment. Key highlights include a living room with Chettinad-style flooring, a creative studio adorned with natural materials and a master bedroom featuring walls smothered with mud lime plater rendering a rustic look and teak wood furnishings. The kids’ room is both playful and functional, while the kitchen combines classic style with modern sustainability practices. Unique features like the 150-year-old Chettinad-style wooden door and traditional Rajasthani plastering techniques underscore the project’s commitment to preserving heritage while embracing modern ecological practices. This project is a testament to the art of sustainable design, offering a visually stunning and environmentally responsible living space.
